America First Credit Union Members Contribute $17,500 to Those in Need

Seven Local Service Organizations Benefit from AFCU Community Assistance Program

OGDEN, UT - America First Credit Union (AFCU) will contribute $17,500 to seven local service agencies as part of its Community Assistance Program during the month of June. The organizations benefited include the Ogden Rescue Mission, The Good Samaritan Program, St. Anne's Center, Catholic Community Services, Your Community Connection, The Christmas Box House International and Share, Inc.

Each organization will receive $2,500 to help further its worthwhile cause and provide assistance to those in need.

"Our branches and members are very service-oriented and have truly adopted a 'people helping people' philosophy," said John Lund, executive vice president of AFCU. "We are pleased to support the organizations that make such a tremendous impact on the communities in which we live and work."

AFCU initiated the Community Assistance Program (CAP) in 1989 as a way to enhance the credit union philosophy and to raise money to help the homeless and less fortunate in the communities it serves.

All proceeds are used to support the organizations, which in turn provide job assistance, training, housing, meals and medical attention to those in need. AFCU members receive a yearly statement informing them of the programs their Community Assistance Program contributions support.

"When donations are made to the Community Assistance Program, members can be assured every penny is dedicated to improving life for those less fortunate in our communities," said Lund. "Nothing is held back or used for administrative or other purposes."

Collection boxes are available at each AFCU location where members can contribute through cash donations or direct deposits.

America First Credit Union Contributes More Than $10,000 to Relay For Life

AFCU Raises $10,000 to Benefit the American Cancer Society to Aid Cancer Research

OGDEN, UT - America First Credit Union will contribute more than $10,000 to the American Cancer Society’s “Relay for Life” event held June 6-7, 2008 at Weber State University’s Stewart Stadium.

“Relay For Life” is an annual overnight team fundraising event celebrating survivorship and benefiting cancer research. Teams consist of 8 to 15 people who take turns running or walking the track for 24 hours on behalf of friends and loved ones who have battled cancer.

America First is a $5,000 sponsor of Relay for Life events held along the Wasatch Front, including the June 6 event. In addition to its sponsorship, America First employees raised more than $5,000 in additional funds through book fairs, hot dog sales, a dodgeball tournament, corporate apparel sales and dress down days.

“Supporting ‘Relay for Life’ is one way we can respond positively to the impact we have all felt from cancer,” said Nicole Cypers, public relations coordinator for America First. “America First’s commitment to the relay is inspired by much more than selflessness or a sense of community spirit. The value of each dollar we put into the event is multiplied many times by the hundreds of volunteer hours and the extraordinary fundraising efforts put forth by businesses and individuals.”

Today, more than three million Americans participate in “Relay for Life” events around the nation. The money raised by “Relay for Life” funds cutting-edge cancer research, early detection and prevention education, advocacy efforts and life-affirming patient services.

“America First is honored to be involved in programs that aid in such meaningful research,” said John Lund, executive vice president at America First. “This is America First’s fifth year participating in ‘Relay For Life,’ and we are grateful to our community and employees who donated time and money to support this cause.”

Background: "Hawk Walk" originated last year, when America First employee, Tammy Gallegos, asked her 12 year-old son, Garrett, to walk with her in the Relay-for-Life. Garrett said he wanted to walk on behalf of his teacher's son, who had recently been diagnosed with cancer. The teacher (who would like to remain anonymous) was very touched and told Garrett that he could walk on behalf of both of her sons, since her other son had been diagnosed with cancer as well.

When other students at the school learned of the situation, they came up with the idea that they all should participate in Relay-For-Life. The school's principal, Maurine Newton, contacted America First Credit Union and explained that since there were so many West Haven Elementary students who wanted to be involved in the relay, the school wondered if they might organize their own event.

All students at West Haven again participated in this year's Hawk Walk fundraiser event, which was a great success!
