Are You Ready to Go with the Flow?

Over the last few weeks, as I’ve felt the crispness of autumn settle in and watched the beautiful leaves turn and fall, I’ve thought a lot about change. The ancient Greek philosopher Heraclitus taught that no one ever steps in the same river twice, because, like the world around us, the river is constantly changing. Although he lived about 2,500 years ago, that idea still feels relevant to me. As they say, it’s classic for a reason.

Just like we can always count on rivers changing and seasons transforming the landscape as they roll from one to the next, we can always count on our lives to be in motion. Whether it’s a new job, sudden unemployment, the birth of a child, the loss of a loved one, starting college, retirement, health challenges, or something else entirely, there’s no end to the ways in which life can shift around us. Which doesn’t always seem like a good thing. After all, it’s only natural for change to sometimes feel scary or for the pace at which it occurs to be overwhelming. However, despite all that uncertainty, throughout my life, I’ve come to appreciate how change brings new opportunities, new experiences, new relationships, and new ways for us to grow.

For me, the keys to handling or even enjoying the constant change of the world have been to do my best to take advantage of those new opportunities, to be mindful of and lean upon the other constants in my life—like my family, my friends, the peace and renewal I find in the great outdoors, and the goodness of the people around me, especially the members of our credit union—and try to be prepared for anything. I’m far from perfect in any of those three areas, but I’m getting better with practice.

I’m sure it’s no surprise that I consider proactive financial planning to be one of the most important ways we can help ourselves prepare for changes— especially those kinds of changes we just never seem ready for. No two individuals, families, or businesses are the same or experience our dynamic world in the same way, but regardless of our differences, it’s so much easier for each of us to weather life’s storms when we have a safe harbor to shelter in. I’m grateful to be part of an organization that understands that and is filled with dedicated employees who work so hard to provide our members with the products, tools, services, and expertise they need to be ready for whatever comes.

Thank you all for being members of America First, for trusting us to help you be financially prepared for all the changes life sends your way, and for everything you do to be a source of strength and stability in your families, workplaces, and communities.
