Credit unions are member-owned, not-for-profit financial cooperatives. More than 90 years ago, Congress recognized their vital role within the communities they serve by granting them an exemption from some taxes. Since then, that tax-exempt status has empowered credit union members to take control of their own financial futures and pursue individual financial goals. It has also helped bolster local economies, and strengthen and support the communities in which they operate and in which members live, work, and worship. However, some for-profit financial interests and institutions are once again pushing for the removal of those protections and the assessment of an income tax.
That’s why we’re urging you to contract your U.S. representatives and senators, voicing strong support for continued credit union tax protections. Please take a few minutes to let them know how essential tax-exempt status is to your financial well-being, and how vital it is to America First’s mission to serve our members. We have experienced great success and healthy growth throughout our 86-year history because we have always operated according to the principle of people helping people. Tax protections have played an invaluable role in our ability to do that.
