President's Message: Celebrate the Season of Giving

Thayne Schaffer
Thayne Schaffer

One of my favorite things about the holiday season is how it brings out the best in people, and how the spirit of giving truly takes over. It seems as if we’re all warmer, more mindful of others, and quicker to do good. Your generosity never ceases to amaze and humble me, and I thought it would be appropriate to report on some of the causes your giving has helped us to support this year.

Make the Winter Warmer for Local Schoolchildren

Warm the Soles is one of America First’s most successful charitable endeavors. Through your generous contributions, we are able to purchase new shoes for kids in need during the holiday season. In 2022, we donated over 2,800 pairs of shoes to kids in 35 schools and organizations. In 2023, our aim is to provide more than 3,300 pairs for students in Arizona, Idaho, Utah, Nevada, and New Mexico.

‘Tis the Season to Stress Less About Debt

For many of us, the holidays are when we increase spending. That means now is a good time to think about ways to manage your debt and make the most of every dollar. If one of your New Year’s resolutions is to stay on top of your finances, here are a few options to consider.

Don’t get Hooked by Holiday Phishing Scams

Consumer scams continue escalating across the country and they can spike during the holiday season, especially phishing attacks, which feature fraudulent phone calls, texts, and emails. In fact, phishing was the #1 cybercrime in 2020, according to Federal Bureau of Investigation, with more than 241,000 incidents reported that year. Here’s how to spot fake communications.

The holidays are the perfect time to help the children in your life develop great financial habits. That’s why through December 30th, when you open a new youth savings account and deposit at least $50 into it, we’ll deposit an additional $50 into the account!

Plan for a Financially Successful Retirement

Are you considering retiring at age 62? You might want to think carefully, because your Social Security benefits could be reduced by up to 30% before reaching full retirement age. Plus, they can be further reduced if you have earned income, and there are important tax, inflation, and spousal implications.
